      RetroPie V4.2 and V4.3
      RPi model 3B

I downloaded the "splashscreen extras" from the gui in "Splashscreens" and when I test them there, they preview nicely. When I reboot the pie, it just shows the terminal commands and then switch to the ES splash instead.

I tried the randomizer in the "own splashscreens" folder, and even added some of them manually to the splashscreen-list, but the result is the same: only when I choose a fixed image from the built-in RetroPie screens I can get a working splashscreen.

      Any tips?

        Solved:

So whatever screen or video you want to use, you're going to put it in the splash screen folder on your USB and physically move it to the default splash screens on your SD. Just go into file manager and to the splash screen folder, highlight your video or image, F6 for move and then type in

        /opt/retropie/supplementary/splashscreen/

Then move down to [OK], enter. Now it's moved to the default splashscreens! All you have to do is go in and change it to that file as you would normally when selecting a default splashscreen.

Having this same issue and, unfortunately, I can get no splashscreens to load at all.

Somewhat stumped at what to do...tried moving things to /opt/retropie/supplementary/splashscreens, changing the splashscreens.list, etc. - still just boot text.

...and oddly, I tried disabling the boot screens and now it won't let me reenable - just stays disabled even after I select 'enable'.

Did you confirm moving the file to the SD card by selecting [OK], hitting enter and then locate the image or video and select it with the splashscreen option under configuration? I just did it with rookvik's Sonic splashscreen video 30 seconds ago and it works like a charm.

@metalgearrex I actually dropped to command line and moved the files that way. I even tried removing my usb drive and seeing if I could get it reset and it's a no go - I just can't seem to get it to activate again (i.e., selecting 'enable' on the splashscreen menu doesn't enable splashscreens, it just flashes the screen and stays disabled).

EDIT: And I fixed it. So, something oddball happened with my config...not sure what. How I fixed it was disable the USB scripts, reboot, turn back on splashscreens and make sure they worked, then reenabled the USB scripts. Works fine now (I think). :)
