RetroPie Setup error on Pi3

Which image ? What version of RetroPie-Setup ?

Git shouldn't ask for any configuration unless you are committing code etc - Perhaps it was interrupted or there were some old files left behind - please post the output of the following (via ssh).

sudo ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_packages.sh xpad remove
sudo ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_packages.sh xpad

@BuZz premade image as stated in the first post :) - Version is the latest right now as it was updated just before. (Version 4.1.14 - Commit: 97c8be4)

@daeks Yes - that gives me nothing to go on. I'm was asking which premade image.

Built From: (Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website, Berryboot, or on top of existing OS etc.. - please provide the filename of any image used)

Looks fixed now anyway - the driver installed fine. If you get it again, remove the xpad driver and re-install. It was likely an interrupted previous install.

I just tried to update and am running into this same exact issue. I started with the pre made image on the RetroPie website "retropie-4.1-rpi2_rpi3.img". From the command line I launched the retro pie setup script and chose "Update all installed packages". Everything seemed to work fine except when it was done it reported "Error running 'git pull' - returned 128". Looking at the logs I get the same log error as the OP.

My controls work fine in emulation station but do not work once I launch a game. So I can not play any games and the start + select combo do not exit the game anymore. My system had been running great until the update.

Update:
Ran the command to uninstall and re-install the xpad driver posted above and when I tried to uninstall it said that xpad wasn't installed. Then I was able to install it and everything is working as it should again. Looks like there is definitely an issue with the update script right now though.

I will try and reproduce it from a fresh image - I can only think that git is not liking the previous checkout, but I haven't been able to reproduce the problem yet.

I know what the problem is now - caused by a conflict - I need to reset the repository first. Will sort out a fix.

Sorry to bring this thread back but it seems the same message is being displayed when updating 4.3.1 to 4.3.2 on a RPi 3:

Error running 'git pull' - returned 1

I have noticed as well that files copied to gamelists folder (.xml files for each system) will be copied via SCP with no problem. However, upon rebooting they are gone. Might not have to do with this issue.

How to replicate the problem:
Use the Retropie-Setup update from Emulation Station. Text will show it is updating to 4.3.2

@derebo it clearly says to start a new topic.

Sounds like it could be internet connectivity issue. But can't say for sure.

Try removing and reinstalling xpad from packages/drivers. Make sure you update the os packages.
