PlayArchive - Is there any interest to add this to RetroPi?
-
I started working on a little program that allows people to play games out of 'The Internet Archives' retro-game collection.
LINK REMOVED
I asked the Archive-Team for their permission before I started to work on this and they gave me green light.
The Program mimics the behavior of the in-browser emulator. It caches the ROM file for a few seconds only long enough for the emulator to load it and deletes it as soon the emulation starts. IT IS NOT MADE TO DOWNLOAD ROMS AND STORE THEM PERMANENTLY.
At the current state PlayArchive is more like an experiment and there is still much work to do but I am wondering if your community would be interested in adding it to the RetroPie project.
I think this could become very useful because it would allow people to play tons of retro games from a legal source with no need for any ROMs. -
@themightyglider i dont think you can post this link here. It may be legal in the us but not all countries. It probably violates the forums rules.

The dmca exemption applies to the entity storing the files, not the individuals downloading them (and yes it does download them regardless of it being deleted, it's the same thing)
This will never be condoned by the retropie project. As above this is skirting the forum rules.
I'll appeal to @BuZz for his opinion/decision

@herb_fargus I concur with you. And their DMCA exclusion as said, does not mean we can legally download from them. Also UK law is different.
-
@buzz Ok. But this would mean that if you would use their play-online function on archive.org you also leave the legal area because your browser loads the roms into your catch. But I can understand what your problems with this are, so just forgott my request. If I should find a solution to load the file into RAM only without touching the hard disc I will ask again maybe.

@themightyglider what people do online is their own business. But providing people with some software specifically for downloading roms from archive.org would not be legal here in the UK.
As some sellers of Kodi in the UK have learnt. And I'm happy they got shut down.

@BuZz Can you please delete this post? I feel already dirty because I've touched properietary software like this ROMs. ;-)
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
