How much and what do you have plugged into it?

I'm just thinking if as you say it is a power issue and that on a plugin boot it then powers the USB parts but on a reboot the USB are still powered.

Apple do a very handy 5A wall plug. Have not tried it myself but hoping to get one soon.

        Hi, thanks for feedback,.
I tried booting after shutting down with no peripherals connected only to get the same result.
I have tried this with two different SD cards only to get same result.
Next course of action is to download a new image despite the original doing exactly what's required..

Devices plugged in were keyboard and mouse, then nothing other than montor...
However....now I think of it I can power the hdmi to vga converter used..

I'd read in other posts a user had similar experience. I guess once I get the 2.5a PSU and vga supplied it may help.

@woody What are the makes of the SD cards? have you checked they are good with the Pi?

@woody I tried to duplicate your problem but no luck.:-( My only guess is to check the config.txt file for the settings for HDMI. One thing I tried is to boot with the HDMI cable disconnected, then plug it in and the screen didn't come up. I tried it again but this time I left the converter connected to the pi but disconnected the VGA connector. After the pi booted reconnecting the VGA and the screen came up. I wonder if HDMI/VGA adapter may be at fault?

Hi thanks for looking into this.

Firstly the sd cards are sandisk 32gb , class 10. I checked compatability prior to purchase so ther are good with Rpi 3 .

I'll try the boot with hdmi/vga disconnected leaving the converter in the pi.

The new PSU 2.5a arrives today so further tests will continue post arrival.

                Thanks again

I'm looking at a hdmi monitor as I intend to build a cabinet so once I find best size I'll be able to remove converter from equation.

Seems quite a temperamental system if such things hamper bootup so easy.

If I'm not mistaken you should always see some sort of boot screen (the one w/ the colors in a square)? So I agree w/ GlennLake that it might want to boot from something other than HDMI or a power issue. Does the Pi 3 have a power light? My Pi 1B lights up when the power cable is connected so you know it's not per se a power issue...

                      Hey guys.
My official raspberry pi3 power supply arrived this morning.
I opted to power the hdmi/vga converter using the old 2a power supply too.

I flashed a new retropie image on to a sandisk 32gb class 10 SD card too so everything was fresh.

As expected the new image booted. I ran through the set up process just using keyboard and all without hitch. Only peripherals plugged in were kb and mouse.

After that I shutdown using the on screen menu system. It was left for approx three minutes. The power supply then cycled (unplugged from pi power port and plugged back in) and the boot up was fast/immediate. I've since had a few games run, shutdown again using the command prompt also and the process is repeatable.

So after all it was the power supply.

So for anyone else witnessing problems the PSU is to blame for any boot problems when using rpi3 .
A 2a PSU is not powerful enough . You must have a 2.5a or above PSU to cover you with rpi3

New buyers be aware because some kits contain incorrectly rated PSU which is not fit for use.

Thanks again to all who contributed comments.

@woody Glad to see it's working now. I couldn't make my setup fail.
