Retro game stuff talk

@flyingtomahawk
I'll echo what @lilbud says and recommend getting an original wii and softmodding it if you don't have one. They have gamecube controller ports so you can still use original gamecube controllers for the games. Plus there are some really good wii games hidden among the shovelware that many people missed.Of course I'd still keep the gamecube as well - I have one myself because apart from anything else it's a cool looking little console :) .
-
I have an old Wii somewhere catching dust.
I need to do some reading on the soft mod stuff though.I just simply like my GameCube. It is orange, has the orange GameBoy adapter attached to it and it is just a sturdy little console.
I want to fix it and mod it with a chip since it doesn't cost much anymore these days. -
@ruckage @FlyingTomahawk I modded my Wii and ripped all of my games to an old SATA laptop drive. Loading is fast and the Wii is practically silent. Also, Wii component cables are significantly cheaper than the GC ones.
-
@flyingtomahawk Here is a softmodding guide: https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/hacking-guide
I have always wanted an orange gamecube, had to settle for silver. But moving to a Wii would be much better. Rip all of your games to a HDD and use Retroarch for GB/GBC/GBA games.

@flyingtomahawk
I perfectly understand, I have the more common purple gamecube but I still love it and wouldn't part with it.Definitely give soft-modding the wii a go, the tutorials are fairly easy to follow. I have mine connected to an old external hard-drive and I've ripped my entire gamecube and wii collection to it so I no longer need to worry about the optical drive failing. With nintendont you can use wii classic controllers to play gamecube games as well if you want to play untethered which is sometimes nice.

@flyingtomahawk i have soft-modded and hard modded quite a few wii’s. The soft modded wii is pretty cool. I still have mine with a 1tb hard drive.
-
Once the Wii is softmodded, can I play any region game directly from the game disk or do I have to rip the games first on to a HD to be able to play?
-
@flyingtomahawk You have to install Priiloader to play region free discs. Though you should install it due to the brick prevention and other features is provides.

-
@flyingtomahawk ripping them is really easy. Its in the same program that plays them. But one of the programs used in the modding process lets you choose to make it region free. That same program is accessed after its modded by holding reset while powering on.
-
To find a non SDHC card is harder then I thought.
Everything is SDHC these days. Damn it.
I also wanted to buy a 2TB external HD but the prices are just too high. So much for end of year sale. Pfft.On to the next store.
-
Found a 2GB normal SD card! The last store I had on my to check list had them. So it looks like I'll be softmodding my Wii tonight.
-
@flyingtomahawk once it is modded you Are able to use a bigger card.
-
Nice. All mod tutorials I have read said that it must be a non SDHC card to do the whole thing and after that you can use USB sticks or external HDs to load games or other stuff.
Not sure if this is within forum rules but is there a specific tutorial that you guys would recommend?
If this is out of the forum rule boundaries then please send a link to my e-mail address in my profile. Thanks. -
@flyingtomahawk looking up “wii softmod 4.3” you should find the tutorial. Im not sure which japanese game you need to do the mod. In the us i use super smash bros.
-
Alright! Softmod done!
That was easier then I thought.
Now I got the homebrew channel on my Wii menu.
Now I will start to read ahead and see what I can install to make things work the way I want. -
I think I got it more or less working but I would like to quickly confirm a few things.
So I got Priiloader installed but it says it can't find any settings file hack...something .ini
When I look at my Wii main menu I have the following new channels (if mentioning any of the following names/channels is a violation of forum rules I apologize and please say so and I remove them immediately)The homebrew channel
Backup HBC
USB Loader GX
GC Launcher
NeoGamma R9 BetaSo I want to run now my genuine, not copy PAL Zelda Windwaker game. What do I do?
Run them with NeoGamma?
Or GC Launcher?
Or maybe a different app/channel? -
@flyingtomahawk you can rip the games with USB loader, just click the plus icon and put the disc in.
To use Priiloader, hold the reset button as you hold the power button on boot.
-
Geeze guys, I wake up and now there's Wii all over the place.
I really need to get to building a console cabinet.
-
@obsidianspider Yeah, we've moved onto Wii hacking. 3DS hacking is sooo last year.
Also, if you build a console cabinet, invest in velcro ties. Makes everything nice and neat
