cave story not saving

im using retropie 4.0 and for some reason cave story doesnt save the progres, anyone having this issue to?

How to replicate the problem: try to save on cave stoy but it doesn save, also when you die and presss continue, the screen satys in black (doesnt happen if you go to menu instead of contnue) -
