I was using lr-fbalpha as my default emulator and noticed I was missing sounds (like donkey kong's opening stomp and mario's squeaky running shoes). So I switched to lr-mame2003 and the sounds worked. When I checked, I saw that there was no "samples" folder under my "roms" folder. But I do have this:

"/bios/mame2003/samples" which is full of files

    and

    "/bios/fba/samples" which is empty

I suppose putting the files there too would make things work. But am I doing it wrong? Should I be setting a path somewhere so that all samples are shared in one folder instead of copying them all to 2 or 3 folders?

Also, I noticed that RA says that high score and save state are set to <content folder>, but all the high scores are in "/bios/<emulator name>". So separate high score files for each emulator too.

Lastly, I noticed that there is a mame2003 folder under my roms folder. and it has several folders like "cfg", "cntrlr" and.... "hi". And there are all the .hi files for every game, many of which I haven't played. Can you help me understand the difference between these files scattered about?

NOTE: I answered the hi score part of my question. For games that don't save high score in the standard way, a hiscore.dat file is needed in /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/ for lr-mame2003. Then the high scores for the roms go are stored in "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/mame2003/hi/"
