@sgtjimmyrustles No worries. I'm not in a rush. I have a saved search and keep my yee out on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. Finding retro game stuff in the wild around here is almost impossible.

The last two days were a blast. I needed to go to Nagoya for work. Meaning a whole new territory and a whole bunch of Hard Offs and other 2nd hand stuff stores.
We visited at least 10 different stores within two days. The co-worker is a hard core Hard-Off fan and he prepared a list with all stores on the way. lol Freak!

Unfortunately, there was not so many cool stuff around at least nothing that I haven't posted here yet. Except for this...

Released by Irem a collection of dog tags embeded inside glass. The dog tags are engraved with the image and model number of each R-Type plane. It looked beautiful and would have looked nice displayed somewhere inside my Game room.

I also was able to collect all the necessary pieces to get my Famicom running. Found a brand new RF unit for 108 Yen! Brand new never used! A over 30 year old device! Insane.
And also the original Nintendo AC unit for 540 Yen. And Super Mario and Super Mario 3 for 540 Yen each.

          Famicom 324 Yen
          AC unit 540 Yen
          RF unit 108 Yen
          Games 1080 Yen

          Total 2052 Yen

The image quality sucks but that is something I accept as part of history. We got used to all that HD stuff and easy forget that things were not that sharp 30 years ago.
At first I didn't wanna bother getting the Famicom at all since I have everything on my Pi but playing the real thing is a different feeling that no emulator can replace. You hold a part of history in your hands and it feels just great like a time slip into the past.

In all honesty, playing on original hardware is so much better for certain systems. Like the early Nintendos and Segas, its better to play on original. But for some newer systems (PSX onward) emulator is the way to go IMO.

@flyingtomahawk That's awesome, but 108,000 yen?! You must REALLY love R-Type.

I haven't updated here in a while, and sadly, no new cool finds from second hand stores, but I did complete some mods in the past few weeks.

I also had an epic fail when trying to repair a burnt screen on another pocket. I got the polarizer removed, but damaged the ribbon. Now I'm looking for a donor pocket to complete that project.

@obsidianspider Run a soldering iron over the ribbon of the gameboy pocket screen. It can fix it up.

With the DMG gameboy, is that a dead horizontal line at the bottom there? Or just the photo?

When I did the same mod on mine, I damaged the ribbon cable like that, but running a soldering iron down the right hand side of the screen, over the section where the ribbon cable is, fixed it up great. You can literally melt the tiny connections going to the screen, and allow them to re-solder themselves.

@mrjordaaany I tried it after watching a number of videos and reading articles that said you need a low temp iron so you don't melt the cable. I tried many times over the course of a few hours, with a last ditch effort using my hot air station and I can't get it to work. :-(

Playing the SNES Aladdin reminded me of how inferior it is to the genesis version.

We're all entitled to our own opinion. But from what I've seen, most people generally agree the Genesis version was better.

Sacrilege. I owned both when they were released and always enjoyed the Snes version much more - classic Capcom at it's best and I can happily play it over and over again. The Megadrive version gets boring fast in my opinion.

I respectfully disagree. The Aladdin by Virgin Games feels more like I'm playing an aladdin game, while the SNES version feels more like a generic platformer. That being said, SNES is smooth and shows off Aladdin's agility and natural grace, but the Genesis one feels more authentic.

I disagree with your disagreement :D

I was impressed with the animation on the megadrive version but I can't say I really enjoyed playing it that much (apart from the level in the Dungeon which I did like).
If it wasn't for the state of the art animation (for the time) I don't believe it would have been regarded so highly when it was released

The snes version feels more varied and the levels are more fun. The graphics though lacking the official Disney animation are equally beautiful and dare I say prettier in many ways than the megadrive version (particularly the backgrounds). For me it's just much more fun to play and so I think as a game it's better. (And it definitely feels like an Aladdin game to me).

Perhaps they shouldn't really be compared as after all they do only share a name and a lot of it boils down to personal taste. And the fact we have 2 totally different high quality games (something that rarely happens today) is in itself a plus as it's one extra game that may never have existed. I got a game I loved, and you got game that you loved - everybody's happy :).

@ruckage @SgtJimmyRustles Wait they are both not the same game? I thought it was just the same game ported to different systems.

@obsidianspider that sucks man. I didnt opt for a lower temp soldering iron, I just used my usual one. The DMG gameboy is alot more durable for sure when it comes to this fix, the ribbon cable can really take the heat.

That being said, its not always the fix. Sometimes the ribbon cable is too far gone.

One thing's for sure - Megadrive/Genesis cases are much nicer (those cardboard SNES cases were terrible - I'm sure most ended up in the bin as they got so tatty). What was it with Nintendo and cardboard cases. On the plus side boxed Snes games are now rarer so worth more.

I always liked the MD stuff more than SNES.
IMO SNES was more mainstream where MD was more for "real" gamers, more gore inside. At least that is what I thought about it then.
I also liked the MD boxes. For cartridges best there ever was. Just the manual holder sucked and you tend to loose them or damage them more often.

The downside of MD is, if you would start to collect all the games now it would cost you a lot, lot money. Acclaim titles are very expensive.

@sgtjimmyrustles due to the genesis’ crappy color palette and crappy audio i prefer any game on the snes over the genesis version. Not saying anything wrong with the genesis as i love playing genesis and sega cd just a personal preference when playing games that are available on both.
