Away for the weekend and brought the new Pi along... after a quick bit of "tweaking" to my original black plastic case. Four new pins (power over ethernet pins, I've learned) on the 3B+ mean that particular case didn't fit straight away.

Does someone know if the 3B+ still comes with disabled USB boot like the 3B does? The 3B can be set to USB boot once via an OTP bit (One Time Programmable) which can be checked (not set, don't worry) by this command:

vcgencmd otp_dump | grep 17

On the 3B, the output is 17:3020000a if USB boot is enabled. Though I don't know if it's the same value for the 3B+.

A friend of mine wants to know if the bit is set on the 3B+ or not.

So, just some thoughts and observations on my Pi 3 B+

Good overclocking. Able to get 1500mhz on the CPU and 500 on the GP at a 2 overvolt stable. This allows Mario 64 to run pretty well without audio cutting out, but other games still struggle like Paper Mario. Some SNES games now run smooth with shaders that didn't before.

The Stretch Beta runs really well on this one.

Networking is way faster, scraping takes about 1 second per title now. Woot!

Bluetooth seems to be faster, cutting out the lag (and the overclock helps) with playing with 8bitdo controllers (the SN30pro is what I tested).

Other than that, not much else really stands out to me.

@dirthurts Thanks for the info. What about the temperatures over time ? Do you use any additional heatsink or cooling stuff ?

@toptrumps found the solution. Putting a blank txt file on the card with extension removed and named it ssh worked

@udb23 I'm using the gen 2 flirc case (i had to shave down the thermal pad to get it to fit) and it's doing great.

Overclocked I didn't really notice any throttling in real world use, but a synthetic test you would possible see some. It seems to be running, actually, as cool or possibly cooler than the Pi 3 base without the overclock.

As far as SSH Toptrumps, are you connected to wifi or hardwired to a network? If you're on wifi, make sure you've set up your localization properly in the Wifi menu, time zones and all that. It's working just fine over here, so you should be able to work out a solution.

So just an empty file called "shh" then? I wanna say I've seen this trick before.

@ohmycommodore Yeah here it is. I enabled it via the menu this time around, but perhaps I can try the "manual" method here as well as didn't get the result I expected:

Enable SSH

Note: Starting with RetroPie 4.2, in order to keep the default image secure, SSH is disabled by default. It can be enabled in either of the two ways listed below.

Pre-boot. From a system with an SD-card reader, access the /boot/ directory and create an empty file called ssh

In raspi-config: after booting.
sudo raspi-config

@dirthurts it has only been the default since retropie 4.2, so if you had/updated from an older version, you wouldn't have to manually enable it.

N64 works fine if you overclock, get the right rom/emulator, and lower the vid settings.

I'm looking forward to a faster Pi release so I can try the Higen emulator.

Not this year apparently.

@quicksilver Well, yeah that's basically it. It's an identical CPU/GPU, it only has better heat and energy management. So basically it is on overclocked, overclocked pi 3. If you're at 3.4 ghz already, it's not a bump.

I could only squeeze 1.25 Ghz out of my old pi, so it's a decent bump for me. I'm starting over with a decent SD card today to see if I can get my games loading at a proper speed.

@dankcushions , it's actually the beta stretch image that I'm using. Couldn't get my old images to run on the 3b+.
