Using external hard drive for roms

I am at a total loss of what is wrong with trying to get my roms loaded onto any external storage device. I have followed so many how tos and tried so many different methods.. first i tried using just normal retropie set up. updating everything, enebling usb, set up time zone and wifi. at first i was able to flash my 128gb external to fat32, plug it into the pi and would load the directory. i would then try to add roms to it in every possible way, leaving some zipped and different formats when possible. just to try and get something to show up, but still noting. so I tried adding ezhacks i believe was the name and attempted that method. followed the videos but before formating my hardrive to ntfs i attempted to use the fat32 format with directory loaded from the first attempt. after a few restarts it finally showed all the roms that were on the drive. that is till i turned my pi off then back on the next day and it was back to square one... so after that loaded a new retropie on a new sdcard and attempted to start over fresh. now i cant get the directory to load onto my drive when its plugged into the pi after formatting. Im just at a toatal loss, can anyone give me any advice or point me to a more detailed how to.... i feel like ive watched all the major ones that show up on youtube and from reading threw others similar forum topics.

If you are still using the EasyHax setup try the following.

1. Make sure you are using the updated version that runs from the RetroPie menu

2. Format the drive to NTFS and create a “roms” folder at the root of the drive. (do not transfer ROMs yet)

3. Run the Expand to External Drive (Disable) to remove any previous setups.

4. Plug External Hard drive to Raspbery Pie

5. Run the Expand to External Drive (Enable) - Pi will shutdown.

6. Plug External Hard Drive into your PC. There should now be a full selection of folders in your “roms” directory. Place your roms into the desired system and it should be good to go.
