Upgrading RetroPie

I have a project that I made about half a year ago that is running Raspbian Wheezy. I would want to upgrade to a newer version of Raspbian and RetroPie, however I spent days trying to get the display (Adafruit) working and would not want to loose this progress. Can you do something like apt-get dist-upgrade?
