I have a Pi 3b Retropie image but I no longer have a Pi 3b. I now have a Pi 3b+. I also have a Pi zero w. How do I get my 3b SD image to work on my 3b+ without a 3b to do the upgrade?

From what I understand, unlike Raspian, Retropie differentiates between the pi zero and the pi2/3's so they do not work with each other. I tried putting the sd card in my pi zero just in case but it would not boot up at all or even light up. I tried putting the sd card in my 3b+ and the image is just black.

Any ideas? I was looking into if there is a virtual box VM I could setup on my Windows laptop with my image, upgrade with the two upgrade OS commands, and then copy the image back but I am not sure how much I trust this. Is my only option to mount the sd image to my laptop, use a third party tool to copy all of the roms/config files/etc. to my laptop, start with a fresh image of the latest retropie on my sd card, and then manually copy files back? If so, any good guides to do this?

@jorgenjl Get a Linux live distro (Ubuntu/Fedora/etc.), write it on an USb stick/CD and boot it up on your PC. You'll be able to read the SD card's contents to copy over your configs/roms, then write the latest RetroPie image on your SD card and transfer over your data.
