Cannot get Start button to work on my controller

I have properly setup my XBox One Wireless (Bluetooth) Controller and all of the buttons/controls show up perfectly when I'm configuring it. The problem is, the button that I have setup as a Start, doesn't work. So, even though I can launch games, I can't start most of them, as most of them, older NES and SNES titles anyway, require me to press the Start button to start the game. This newer version of the XBox controller doesn't have buttons labelled Start and Select. The buttons that used to be labelled that way are now called View and Menu. I made the View button Start and the Menu button Select. These buttons show up with the button number just fine during configuration but the Start button does nothing within a game. Also, the Start/Select combination does not exit back to the menu like it is supposed to. Instead, I have to press Start/Select/Right Trigger to exit. I can't see where that is a default button combination for anything.

I should mention that, within the Retropie menu system, the Start button brings up the main system menu like it is supposed to. It is only within the games that the Start button doesn't do anything. Alos, I've swapped which of the two buttons I make Start and Select. Again, it makes no difference.

@bfollowell You probably mapped the Hotkey button over your Start button. Re-configure your controller from start and when asked about a Hotkey just skip the mapping. The setup will ask you about using Select instead - choose yes. Try again any game and see if the buttons work now.

Thanks for your reply, but no, I mapped it to the same button that I mapped my Select button to. Still, I didn't do it the was you mentioned and I'm willing to try again. How do I skip mapping the Hotkey?

Use the D-pad down button.

OK, I tried it again that way, but that didn't work. All that did was map Hotkey to Hat 0 Down, which is that same key that my D-Pad Down is.

Something else that occurred to me. I saw in a video, or maybe read in a post, that we should always force a format of an SD card before installation of the image, even on a brand-new SD card, or all kinds of funky little quirks could happen. I don't believe I did that though. Any idea if that could be causing some issues? Maybe I should format my card and try again.

@bfollowell I don't think the formatting has anything to do with your problem. What is the exact controller model you're using ?

It's the newest (as far as I know) XBox Wireless Controller. Model 1708. Bluetooth model. Doesn't need the USB adapter or anything like that like the 360 and earlier One wireless controllers did.

I went through controller setup again. This time I made the XBox button my Hotkey. Now I can start games by pressing Start and Right Trigger and I can exit a game to the main menu by pressing XBox button and Start. The Start button by itself, however, does nothing.

I should mention that the Start button works by itself flawlessly as you would expect from within Emulation Station to bring up the main menu. It's only within the actual games themselves that I have to use the weird Start/Right Trigger combination.

Any ideas?
