Hello! I Have been working on a RetroPie box using the Media Pi Plus case and I have everything working except for the IR receiver.
The supplier of the case has instructions for a working IR setup but only for OpenELEC. and i was wondering if there's a way to get LIRC to work for navigation in EmulationStation and Kodi Standalone. I have not been able to get it to work.
The supplier has the LIRCmap files listed here http://sb-components.co.uk/resources/mediapiplus/code-and-config/ and i have enabled LIRC in the config.txt in /boot but still nothing. any help?

I don't know about ES but it works in Kodi, if you configure lirc correctly and start Kodi with just:
          kodi

If you are on RetroPie 4.0-dev it should work if you launch Kodi from ES also. It is working here at least.

              Something like this:
              http://alexba.in/blog/2013/01/06/setting-up-lirc-on-the-raspberrypi/

There are alot of tutorials on how to set lirc with an infrared remote in a linux system, you just have to google it.
