It looks more like a libretro core issue than a RA problem, but maybe the new version doesn't ignore the fatal error returned by the core anymore. Did it work before updating RetroArch ?

@mitu it worked before having to do a fresh install to have raspbian stretch. The 3 newest lr-mame emulators have these issues now. I had no issues while i was using retropie 4.3 jessie. And now even darksavior has confirmed the issue.

@edmaul69 To test the theory of RA version upgrade, you could downgrade it to the 1.7.1 version and re-build RA from source. I don't think these cores have received any substantial updates recently to justify the breakage.
You can open /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/scriptmodules/emulators/retroarch.sh and switch the RA version on line 40, then comment the line 43 - the patch which removes the controller re-indexing. Then rebuild RA from source and re-test. NOTE - after re-building you should run git reset --hard from the RetrPie-Setup folder so your changes would not stop future RP script upgrades.
I'll try a re-compile myself, but it might get some time.

@mitu downgraded to 1.71 and still the same issues. I am going to hook up my pi 3 b and stick in my old card and see what retroarch i was on then.

@edmaul69 Since the error seems to related to samples, maybe you updated some samples for Dkong recently. Any other game that had trouble which you might test on an older release ?

@mitu i dont acually have any samples. Im not going to stress it. Mame2016 at least plays donkey kong. I use mame 2003 for most stuff. I usually use mame2010 for world class bowling, golden tees and games like tapper that dont work in mame2003. Im just going to need to find a way to get the golden tees and world class bowlings mouse working. But that could be an issue that my apple iie keyboard is seen as a controller/mouse/joystick and i have an apple iie mouse adapter hooked up too. I need to see if there is a way to control which mouse it use. But it worked on the old mame 2010 i was using.

@edmaul69 While having no experience with compiling, maybe it's a compile problem. I compiled "lr-mame" that took over a day and no games load. Something about wrong platform.

What was the solution here in the end? Why doesn't Mame2016 work?
