Legal question
-
I know selling Rasberry pi's with ROMs pre installed is not legal, however while tooling around( still not bought one lol) I found some Pi's for sale with retropie installed. Is that legal, if so is it worth reporting?
-
@ruthless4u some of the emulators are copyrighted and have a non commercial license. So it is illegal to sell even without games. As far as reporting, thats up to. Doubt it will change anything. Another seller will pop up.

@ruthless4u Even if you choose to ignore the legality of buying a questionable system loaded with roms, I would strongly advise you not to do it. If you read this forum, you will see a lot of people who have issues with configuring one of those systems, and when they come here for help, they are all told the same thing - you only get help if you use a retropie image from this site. There are a lot of people on here who are very helpful, and really understand the details of retropie, so stick to getting retropie here and take advantage of the support you can get.

I just thought it was interesting that when asked in sellers FAQ why they did not have roms installed it was because of questionable legality but they still have it advertised that it comes with retropie installed which is still not legal.
No intention of illegally buying anything, just looking for the best price when I have time to actually buy and work on it Newborns eat a lot of your " free" time lol.

I could sort of understand if it was like selling the Pi with the SD card for the same value but if the person is charging like double the price that would be considered illegal i find and also when i said the SD card as well i mean just having the files needed without the roms cause there is people i know that wants to buy a Pi but only has like an ipad so they would not be able to install retropie.

I’ve been waiting for years for my kids to get old enough to help out and learn something in the process. Lurking and gearing up for starting my project.

Apart from just being uninformed, I guess they are more afraid of the ROMs' copyright holders than of the emulator's programmers, as the former tend to be big corporations known to sue copyright infringers, whereas the latter tend to be private indiduals or small businesses. Also, many people confuse "free of charge" with "free of rules".
