I bought a Pi3 today.
The Beeb appears to be running a LOT better now.Hello. Sorry to drag up an old thread but how is the BBC emulation on the Pi3 now?
I have an old Acorn Electron that I will be putting my Pi3 into and like you would like to have retropie setup just to do the old computers from my youth. Sadly I don't think retropie supports Elkulator for the Electron so the BBC will have to do.
Just wondering how it all turned out in the end?

@buzz BBC Micro would be great, any chance of Archimedes support too? Perhaps wishful thinking, guess it takes a lot to Code the BBC micro alone? Have tried MESS and just can’t get my head around it without screwing up retropie

@gavlarr1 There are no plans to code any new emulator - but I did intend to look at porting over a beeb em. I still haven't found time to do it.

@gavlarr1 I was able to get MESS working via AdvanceMAME/MESS 3.x. I posted a screenshot above, but I have no idea what I am doing with that micro. I have since removed the config, but I think I could get it back or tell you what I did.

@buzz I've got a beebem script in my unstable repo. Has some problems but some have said they have it loading disks from the command line which was the main problem for me originally. It's been a long time since I looked at it though.

@zerojay Thanks. yeah I've seen that and I did have it working myself, but it needs some changes imho (alsa audio backend / sdl file requester perhaps for disk swapping).

@buzz Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I was just wondering if you'd had any time to consider porting a working (with sound) Beebem emulator. I'm using Advmess successfully, but it is a bit awkward from a controls perspective, given that each game has different keyboard controls. Thanks for all your hard work!

I can see that Archimedes is unlikely and probably needs you to boot RiscOS on the Pi anyway but BBC/Electron/Atom should be feasible... +1 from me please!

I have some Beeb and Archimedes games going on Risc OS at the moment.
If you're willing to swap over an SD card, it's really not all that difficult to get it happening. If they brought Risc OS back into PINN and NOOBS, it'd be even easier, because you could just dual boot with Retropie.

@handsomegenius For some reason, I had associated RiscOS with the Raspberry Pi 2 and hadn't cottoned on to the fact you could install it on the Raspberry Pi 3B. You've provided a very interesting tutorial too and would be especially of interest to those who would like to play Archimedes Elite on their Pi.

If you try to install Risc OS on a Raspberry Pi 3 using NOOBS or PINN, it doesn't appear in the menu. Which is super annoying actually - because using PINN to dual boot Risc OS and Retropie would be a badass retro gaming rig.
But the SD card image file from the Risc OS Open website is running fine on my Raspberry Pi 3 B. They haven't configured it yet to work with the onboard wireless though.
I actually haven't been able to get Elite to run yet :( But that's mostly because I've been playing heaps of platformers :)

My humble opinion is that the RISCOS community is very cryptic.
They seem not to want new people there.
The Image causes issues in Pi3 and it lacks basic things.
Trying to put an unzip program there, is a big task when you are a Riscos newbie... -
I don't think that's quite it. Before I put Risc OS on my Pi, I hadn't touched it in 25 years. So I got stuck in a couple of places while putting it together and ended up asking for help on a couple of forums. The dudes were super prompt to help and super nice about it.
But it's a fairly small community, who seem to fall into 2 groups: those who use it professionally in embedded devices, and diehards who just never moved away. So pretty much all the discussion reflects that.
There is BIG lack of beginner-friendly projects and tutorials. You're kind of just left to scour the whole internet and put things together piece-by-piece. Which is a pity, because the actual OS is MILLIONS of times gentler on newbies than Linux.
That's kinda why I went to the effort to writing a 6000 word blog post on the whole thing - because once it's all laid out step-by-step, it's an incredibly easy project. Your games will be running in no time.
Unzipping things is actually another great example. One you know about !SparkFS, it's actually ridiculously easy to use and install - way easier than using archives from the Linux command line for the first time. But until you know what to look for, you don't know what to look for.

@handsomegenius thank you for your tutorial. It seems it is the first time I read something so extensive about the first step in RISCOS setup. I will have a go and I may interupt you asking things :)

@zerojay, I downloaded your beebem.sh file from https://github.com/zerojay/RetroPie-Extra-unstable, but when I try to run it (in Retropie environment using the putty program) I have "unexpected newline" errors. If I delete all the newlines from the script then I have other types of errors. Please advice me what is the correct way to install beebem for a n00b like me? Thanks in advance!
