Take it from someone who has tested quite a few of these, they are not worth your time. Buttons fail, wiring breaks, they're too light. The problems never end with these things. However, if you use an original Nintendo controller along with a USB adapter from someplace like Raphnet or retroUSB, the end result will likely never fail.

That really is a slick product. It doesn't make mention of compatibility outside of a basic Nunchuck though.

@mediamogul I have a USB dogbone NES controller that's worked perfectly fine for two years now. I would only use the NES controllers for NES games anyway. I've got plenty of other controllers for whatever else.

Case in point from above. I have a few friends who would benefit from such a controller, but I have been unable to recommend one based on my previous experiences. Do you happen to know the manufacturer for future reference?

I think it's great Nintendo is doing this for the masses, but I still find it funny that RPi is cheaper and can hold the entire NES library... not to mention all the other emulators.
I like how how everyone's thoughts on here is how it would make a great case for a RPi :D

My first thought was that it's diminutive size would make me feel like a giant in my own living room. My second thought was that it's fantastic that they will be selling additional controllers separately. Along with my Pi, I also have a modified Wii with a full NES library on it and the idea of having an actual first party NES controller tailored for that is nothing short of amazing.

@mediamogul It's a Retrolink controller. I've heard people complain about that brand that the dpad will sometimes hit a different direction than the one desired but I've never had that issue and one of my favorite NES games is Super Dodge Ball which requires a lot dpad presses. Idk maybe I just lucked out and got a good controller. I only got it because it was affordable and not the rectangle shape. Those rectangular ones are torture on the hands. Probably why I have bad arthritis as an adult.

Retrolink got a bad reputation early on, but I never got the impression that they were a fly-by-night company. It could be that they have worked on improving their product. If that's the case, I kind of respect that more than a company that gets it right the first time. Their controllers are priced very affordably, so I'll have to give them another shot somewhere down the road. Thanks.

I know, I saw that yesterday and I freaked. This is so awesome. I might just buy it for the hell of it. The box package is sooo tempting. Thank you Nintendo!

Nope I don't like what Nintendo is doing. In fact I'm getting a little bit disappointed to see all those remakes or re-release of older games. The only reason why they're doing it is because they cannot think off something new anymore.
It occurred to me that lately that 8bit thing started to become a hype and I really don't like it because to be honest with you guys I hate hypes. I used to play emulator games since 2001 and now 8 bit has become soooo cool? Nope I don't like it.
I'll stick to RetroPie has everything I need and it works like it should work. I'm glad that configuration the Pie can be a pain in the ass for the average Joe can you imagine if this went mainstream?

NES paved the way for gaming today. For Nintendo to bring back the NES, there must be a demand for it. I have heard people who do not even game want this, so it should say something. I for one already have the original NES and tons of emulators and roms yet I still want this and I can't wait to get it. This will probably be selling like hotcakes.

I think I know how you feel. I am this kind of guy that doesn't like hype.
But I have a son (13 years old) and a nephew (10 years old), and I love when they wanna play NES/SNES games with me.I won't buy this mini-NES! Not exactly because it's mainstream, but because it lacks many features and, since it's branded "closed" product, doesn't estimulate tinkering to implement such features.
To be honest, I would be happy if more and more teenagers were able to take a Raspberry Pi, install RetroPie, and tinker a bit to do some crazy gamming projects (like those we see here in the forum).

Most people want to play these games again to relive the feeling it gave them when they were kids. To me, it was an ever-expanding world that existed in trying new techniques to win, reading strategy guides and discussing it all with my friends while trading ideas and hopes for the future. Ironically, I only ended up finding that feeling again in working with the Raspberry Pi itself. The ability to play the games afterward really became secondary to the overall experience of getting them to work well in the first place.
