Pi Model or other hardware: 3 B+
Power Supply used: 2.5 A from CANAKIT
      RetroPie Version Used: 4.4
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website, linked from

USB Devices connected: flash drive, keyboard ps3 controller
      Controller used: ps3
      Error messages received: NA
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant): NA
      Guide used: Multiple, see below
      File: NA
Attachment of config files: Will provide if needed
How to replicate the problem: No idea

I just made this account to post about the issues I have been having running the latest retropie version with composite video out to a crt. I was under the impression that getting 240p out of this would be a simple task but I STILL haven't managed to do it after reading multiple tutorials and being forced to format the sd card three times because I kept messing stuff up and was unable to fix it.

I have tried the following methods:

      1. https://github.com/ektgit/snap-shader-240p

      2. https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/15737/solved-240p-per-emulator-run-command-setting-possible/3

      3. http://filthypants.blogspot.com/2017/03/raspberry-pi-240p-composite-output.html

I wasn't able to get anything out of #2 and when I tried #3 I just got black screens when I loaded emulators, sometimes no screen image showed up at all. I came across the first method from this video:

Now here is the problem; the github link has instructions that are obviously for seasoned users of the device, which I am not. I have no idea where a lot of the settings even are in the part marked "MAKE SURE YOU", I attempted to brute force it and just ended up with black screens again. Could anyone take some screenshots or tell me exactly where to find these settings? Also, what is " /flash/config.txt "? I thought it was "/boot/config.txt"? Is this a typo or an entirely different setting? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I recently created a topic with custom configurations to use retropie on crt tv's with the built-in composite out, maybe that is what you are looking for.

Just checked it out, this has my attention:

                1. install low resolution friendly themes for emulation station (gbz35, gbz35-dark, freeplay, tft, pixel-tft, minilumi and simpler-turtlemini are good ones).

any easy guides on how to do this? Keep in mind I have only had a raspi for about 24 hours, with 20 of them being me fighting it.

You really should read on about the Raspberry Pi and RetroPie in general before trying to customize your installation. Themes can be installed from the RetroPie setup script - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Themes/.
