VNC Support (built in or extra module)?
-
This is a bit of a personal situation but I'd suspect a lot of people may have the issue.
When I'm tinkering with my Pi/RetroPie, because I'm using the living room TV, the wife cannot watch Bake Off or Emmerdale or whatever.
It would be really handy if I could VNC into RetroPie/EmulationStation when I am setting up/testing ROMS.
I have no interest in playing anything via VNC, just testing what setting I have changed might have done, or checking that a ROM loads up correctly etc...
I did try to load tightvnc server, but could not get it to play ball.
It would be great if some VNC functionality was supported out of the box.

doesn't vnc need X? since neither emulation station or any of the emulators use X, I don't see how it's possible.

Yes, VNC uses X to display the screen. Also, the easy TightVNC viewer setup does not display the same screen as the HDMI output. It is possible to display that screen, but it's a lot more configuration to make it work. Even then, it is still X and not going to show the emulators and/or emulationstation.
I have an old monitor with an HDMI to DVI adapter to display on when the TV is in use.

You are looking for dispmanx vnc. It does not require X to function as it uses the dispmanx display driver. I've used it previously in an attempt to get to play from elsewhere but found the performance wasn't up to par on a Pi 2 for gameplay. For your purposes, it will probably work out fine. It's been probably a year since I used it last so I'm not really a go-to help source on it.
