@gillandro Please give more details about your setup - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. Which emulator are you using and how are you trying to bring up the menu ?

There is no such emulator, but you probably mean Mupen64 - which is not a RetroArch core, hence the normal RA exit shortcut not working.

@mitu thank you for the correction.... that being the case then... how can I remap the controls on that particular emulator then as when I play something like golden eye the controls are weird... I am using an xbox 1 controller btw and the left stick controls the view and the cross bar controlls the aiming I think and I rather use the xbox one right stick for the camera angle...thanks for your help thus far.

@gillandro If your buttons are now mapped to standard then press Select + Y when in the game and change individual button mappings for that emulator in the Controls submenu.

Not to be rude, but you should read the whole thread before you post, he isn't using a RA emu. :)

@gillandro You can edit these files to change the controls:
                  /opt/retropie/configs/n64/mupen64plus.cfg
                  and
                  /opt/retropie/configs/n64/InputAutoCfg.ini

@gillandro Those are not commands, they are files to be modified, you don't do that by 'executing' them (i.e. typing their names at the command line prompt and pressing Enter). Use the nano text editor to modify their contents, using the documentation for N64 emulation as a guideline.
