Wired Xbox360 controller only working in RetroPie menu
-
Hi
So I just recently got RetroPie and a wired Xbox controller. I plugged it in and as it should RetroPie asked me to configure the controller, which I did. I got some ROMs and when I opened them the controller would just not work (I had a keyboard connected throughout all attempts). I downloaded the xpad drivers and rebooted and that didn’t work either. But my keyboard works to control the games and as soon as I exit the game the controller just stops working all together.I’m running RetroPie on top of raspbian which I flashed via noobs.
Thanks for the help!

The
xpad
driver is available through the RetroPie-Setup script (https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Xbox-360-Controller/#xpad-driver). Did you installed it through the script or manually ? Also, please include more info about your system as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. -
@mitu I installed the xpad via the script I’m using a raspberry pi 3 model B and powering it using the stock power supply that came with the pi and the only devices I have connected is the rock candy wired Xbox 360 controller and a keyboard.
-
Also I forgot to say that I’m running RetroPie version 4.1
-
FWIW, I have no issues with my wired XBox One controller on RetroPie 4.4, though you may see that some games (especially SDL2 games) don't like the
triggers_to_buttons=1
default that RetroPie sets in/etc/modprobe.d/xpad.conf
. -
@lazd would that fix the issue? also the controller lights keep on flashing rather than just one quarter lighting up.

@screw said in Wired Xbox360 controller only working in RetroPie menu:
RetroPie version 4.1
That is an old release and I don't think it's tested or supported anymore. Regardless, you should install the
xpad
driver from the RetroPie-Setup menu, but you'll have to update the script first (there's an option in the main menu to do that). -
@mitu thank you I’ll be sure to try that.
-
So I decided to flash RetroPie 4.4 onto another sd card and deleted it off my other to keep the operating systems separate. But would you believe it I’ve got another issue!
I flashed RetroPie onto the sd and as soon as I power it on I get the message “end kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179,2)
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

@screw Looks like a bad image write - use Etcher and write the image again, verifying the image was written correctly.
-
@mitu I’ve tried twice with etcher should I try again? Or use a different sd card?
-
Try first formatting the card completely. What sd card are you using ?
-
@mitu I’m using a verbatim premium 8gb class 10 sdhc.
-
@screw I live in Australia so I got it at Kmart so it might just be a brand that they only sell their.
-
@mitu i completely reformatted the sd and updated etcher still the same error.
-
Turns out 9 zip was the cause of the end kernel panic issue. So if anyone has this same issue use win rar and try updating RetroPie as the controller now works too.
Thanks for all the help.

@screw One of the advantages of Etcher is that you don't need to extract the image, so you just write it as is.
