I am not talking about in game slow down, more of booting slow downs. When I start Retropie now it stays on the "emulationstation screen for a while. Also when I press F4 it hangs there for a while before getting to the prompt. I would assume this is an issue with files on the memort card, currently I have a 30GB Micro SD card that is 70% full. any tips?

The more roms/systems you have loading the longer it takes to load everything.

100% correct. The more games you have, the longer it takes to load ES. And lordy, if you have scraped systems, prepare to sit around for a while. ES takes a very, very long time to load gamelists. If you're using a Pi1 or Zero, I highly suggest NOT scraping your systems. :D

@Rookervik i dont scrape anything. With all my graphics used in my theme and how many games i have i think emulationstation would blow up if i tried scrape anything.

@epicrean You should turn off Save Metadata on Exit as described here:
