Lost Tab to configure one Mame

Hi all..
I am trying to configure controllers for my mame emulators on one of my builds as i have just started using bluetooth controllers. When i press tab i used to enter an menu to configure controllers. When i press Tab now nothing happens..
What can i do to get this back? have i screwed up a retroarch config file? i have tried to restore one from a past image where this still works to no avail.. Any help would be great.
