Roms only work in /root/RetroPie/roms
-
So when i updated to retropie 4.0 beta 1 whatever it was called and added kodi it changed from letting me use the roms in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ to /root/RetroPie/roms/ this hasnt been a problem until now. Trying to add ports is causing a problem since i dont know how to tell it to look for files in /root/ . For me to use the port demo games i have to move the .sh file to /root/RetroPie/roms/ and point the es_systems.cfg there. but if i put my own files in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ including the port folder where i need it to read my files no matter the system the files dont work. If i hit f4 it shows me logged in as pi@RetroPie. I really would love to be able to use the correct location again but i have no clue how to fix

i fixed it. i chown'ed it back to pi and i tested roms and ports and they work great. i never knew how to chown anything. stumbled across another recent post that mentioned it so i tried it and it was my answer

@edmaul69 it seems that you have not lost that habit of using the root user... :-)

@meleu this is something that happened installing kodi back on 4.0 beta 1. I went looking for the kodi files i needed after installing it and found them in root instead of home. And since i keep my roms on my hard drive i havent had an issue. Its only just recently when i am installing ports have i even needed to use the folders on my sd card so this wasnt a problem until yesterday when i installed wolf4sdl and needed to run my full version wolfenstein.

Out of personal interest, could you elaborate on the chown process you went through, as in which directories or files were affected. If you could also link to the other post that helped you, it would be most illuminating.

@mediamogul sure. I did this:
sudo chown -R pi /home/pi
I found it on this post here:
https://m.reddit.com/r/RetroPie/comments/3b8xod/new_to_retropie_permissions_denied/
Nothing i put in the roms folder worked. I had tried 0777 permissions as well. However any port that retropie installed worked if i moved the .sh to root. All the doom ports i was able to point to the root folder but i never got any mods to work. Still havent tried those yet. Trying to use wolf4.dsl created a problem brcause it doesnt have a config or .sh that actually points to the rom. I actually had to give 0777 permissions to /opt/retropie/configs/ as well after that update. Without the permissions about 100+ errors would come up about gamelists and roms

Very interesting, thanks. Whenever I see these technical hiccups come up out of nowhere, I'm always reminded of a guy named

@mediamogul i guess that was better than getting "rick rolled" ;)

It's funny to think there was a time where people lived in constant fear that any internet link might result in being inundated with the silky smooth stylings of what looked to be a mid-nineties Nickelodeon game show host.
