gba games are not working at all

I downloaded the sdcard image for the rpi1, transfered my .gba rom files with sftp in the GBA folder, restarted emulationstation.
roms are showing up in the list but once I start them it goes back to the list.
it tells me errors are shown in /dev/shm/runcommand.log but the file is 0 byte.any ideas?

nvm. forgot to put a gba bios.
