      Hello,

      I've updated RetroPie Setup from the 3.8.1 SD image to 4.0 RC1 following this guide: Updating RetroPie.

      If updating from 3.x and earlier select: Manage Packages >> Quick Install and Update All Installed Packages

      • After doing the above, is my RetroPie version now 4.0 RC1?
      • I have a full backup image prior to doing this, but when updating do I need to worry about overwriting configuration files I've setup or other pitfalls?

      Thanks, I'm looking to understand this a little better and be more confident in the future.

        @briankross
        A concept that you have to lay down is:

        RetroPie-Setup is a set of shell scripts that helps to install several emulators/retro gaming systems.

        If you update RetroPie-Setup, you don't automatically update the emulators.

          @briankross in theory it shouldn't overwrite configs on updates, so you should be fine but as you said you have a backup that's a wise thing to do just in case.

            My previous answer is incomplete. Trying again.

            Manage Packages >> Quick Install and Update All Installed Packages

            • After doing the above, is my RetroPie version now 4.0 RC1?

            Yes, your RetroPie-Setup is now 4.0 RC1. But not only the RetroPie-Setup was updated...

            The "Quick Install and Update All Installed Packages" will install/update all the packages installed by the RetroPie-Setup on your system.

            • I have a full backup image prior to doing this, but when updating do I need to worry about overwriting configuration files I've setup or other pitfalls?

            Maybe. A full backup is an excellent idea! :-) But if you face some problems, let's try to solve! The wiki and the forum is here for it too!

              I have adjusted the wiki - You don't need to do a quick install when updating from 3.8. Just update retropie-setup then do Manage Packages -> Update Installed Packages.

              Once on 4.x you can just use this when you wish to update stuff - it will always force an update of retropie-setup too.
