In the end: is it worth all the work? I used to play chds with MAME on Windows and it really needed a lot of performance.
It worked well with an Athlon64-FX55, but had issues even with a Pentium 4.
So i doubt that chds will run on a Pi with more than 5 FPS.
      Has anyone experience with that?

@sirhenrythe5th area51mx runs fine that’s what I use it for. True killer instinct and blitz and things will probably be too slow to be much fun.

@sirhenrythe5th This old spreadsheet of mine might be useful (sheet four is the one of relevance here), though it only lists the performance of CHD games in lr-mame2003-plus.

          https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Bk30k4As9RZ2b6T54jKzRnu8xifEX_TALPNZUQtrRXM/edit?usp=sharing

Still, any CHD game running slow in lr-mame2003-plus/lr-mame2003 should run faster in AdvanceMAME, and would guess a few more CHD games were added between MAME 0.78 (lr-mame2003-plus/lr-mame2003) and MAME 0.94/MAME 0.106 (AdvanceMAME v0.94/AdvanceMAME v1.4/AdvanceMAME).

Personally, I couldn't bear the screen tearing I experienced from the little I messed with the emulator family. Certainly an option if you have some games you want to run full speed that you can't otherwise (that was my plan for the emulator family until the screen tearing turned me off from the idea).

@MajorDangerNine thanks a lot for this Information.
I still have those chds on an external HDD, maybe i give it a try too.
The files are from 2007, so maybe they still match with 0.106, otherwise i am used to use chdman.

My favourites were Carnevil and Aera51.
I remember that at least Carnevil was very hungy concerning CPU-Power.
I am very excited how it runs on a Pi 😊

AdvanceMame is my absolute favourite Port on the Pi, so i wont use Mame2003+

@sirhenrythe5th Hope you are on a RPi3B+ and possibly even overclocked if you got lucky.

I believe the emulation for Carnevil will be faster, but not so fast as to be full speed.

Area 51 might run full speed.

In both cases, you might also improve the emulation speed by reducing the resolution by using the Runcommand. https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Runcommand/

Did not get it to work fine. :
its always says in the logfile (*.chd not found)
and its in a folder with the roms same name and so.
If someone have a video or detail by detail how do i make it work ...
                maybe then :)

@shavecat did you check the image_dir line on the advmame 1.4 .rc file? Does it match the ROMs folder?

The CHD-File does not seem to match your MAME-Version.
They also evolve with the MAME-Versions.
To prevent permanent downloading of tons of gigabytes every time a tool called "CHDMan" was created to simply update your CHD-Images to the newest state.

I dont know if your CHD of Killer Instinct is younger or older than that which is required by your MAME-Version.
I am not sure if downgrading is possible, i only upgraded my CHDs.

@shavecat sorry, english is not my native language.
I try to explain it with less words.
You know that i.e. Roms for MAME 0.32beta4 wont run on MAME 0.190.
Well, and thats the same with the Harddisk based Arcade-Games and their CHD-Files for MAME.
You may have the Killer Instinct Image that was meant for MAME 0.61....and this does not run on your MAME 0.78 :/

@sirhenrythe5th CHD can be packed with different chdman versions - older version were CHD v3, new ones are CHD v5. That's what the error message says - I think.
@shavecat look at the .chd file by running

                            chdman info -i file.chd

and see which CHD version is the file.

You can find chdman in any recent MAME distribution (PC/Windows) from https://www.mamedev.org.

@mitu thanks for this proper information πŸ‘

I can remember that i used chdman several times to fix my chds to newer releases of MAME.
I had chds since they appeared in MAME the first time.
So i guess there were also versions like 3.1, 3.2, and so on?
I really had to use the tool quite often, at least in 2006 and 2007, and not only once to update from 3.0 to 5.0 😐
