The games as .cue files are working fine. I convert them using CHDMAN from the download link provided on the wiki of this website and they seem to convert fine but when I try to run the .chd file I get the standard white box saying what emulator is launching but then it just closes and shows the list of games again without the game loading. I'm using the lr-genesis-plus-gx emulator.

@Krytern Seems like a missing BIOS - do the games work as .cue/.bin or you get the same problem ?
Please addd more info about your system, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

@mitu The games work fine as .cue files so the BIOS seems to be working for cue files at least.

Sorry about missing the details of my system, here they are:
        Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+
The official white power supply, 5.1V 2.5A
Retropie version 4.4 built from Pre made SD Image
        No USB devices connected
Using a Dualshock 4 controller via bluetooth

@Krytern Can you get a log file from the emulator to see if we spot any errors ? When launching the game, open the Runcommand launch menu and enable 'Run with verbose logging'. After the game exits back to Emulationstation, get the /dev/shm/runcommand.log file and post it on pastebin.com.

@Krytern The error I see is

              [...]
[libretro INFO] INFORMATION - Loading 0 bytes ...
              [ERROR] Failed to load content.

which means RetroArch cannot read the file or the .chd file is empty ?
How large is the .chd file ?

@Krytern I wonder if it's because of the older version of RetroArch - is there a reason you haven't updated it ?

@mitu I didn't realise I was using an old version. I've just updated retropie-setup script and the stuff in there, including RetroArch but I am having the same problem. Here is the new log: https://pastebin.com/7x42EY9A

@Krytern The new log is not very different than the old one. Is there a way to check if the CHD is valid - maybe load RetroArch on your PC ?
I'll check one of my CHD on the Pi system I have, to see if there's some emulator related error, but I doubt it, there haven't been any major changes at all in the Libretro core in the last months.

@mitu Looks like it is a problem with the CHD file. I used CHDMAN from the wiki on this site and it didn't give any errors so it is strange I am having issues.

@Krytern Did you test it on the PC ? You can run chdman -i info <chdfile> to see what CHD version is used.

@mitu Yes I tested them on PC and they aren't working on PC either so definitely seems to be a problem with the files themselves. Here is a pastebin of the info command: https://pastebin.com/s6g48Nr7

I need to post the solution to this issue as it affected me as well:

                              If you have:

                              1. Checked you have the correct BIOS files in the correct place.
                              2. Checked you have the CHD files correctly created (i.e. install retroarch on your PC and run the CHD file in genesis-plus-gx - if it works, the file is OK).

But your Sega CD games are still not playing and just crashing back to game select screen after the runcommand screen. Then here's the answer:

Go into retropie setup and update all packages.

That's it. It's that simple. After that, your CHD games should work and you can save a huge amount of space on your sd card.

@krytern said in CHD games not working for Sega CD.:

Looks like it is a problem with the CHD file.

sounds like you may not have converted it properly.

I downloaded Sonic CD to test ...

Firstly, you need to use CDmage (V1.02.1) to convert the 35 *.bin file tracks of Sonic CD into a single *.bin before you can use CHDMAN

after that you will have just 2 files ..

                                Sonic CD (USA).cue
Sonic CD (USA).bin --------- which is 587,601KB in size

                                after running CHDMAN

                                Sonic CD (USA).chd --------- 329,386KB

which is approx 12MB larger than your 317MB file

Tested it with my setup, and it works fine
