don't know if its what you are looking for but I have ordered the PowerBlock to help me with this

Yeah I thought about that, it was a little bit to expensive inc shipping. I was looking for a cheap aliexpress clone didn't find any.

@trekdrop You'll need to use a power switch extension board. Links to some options are below. These will include a script to safely power your Pi on/off:

          ATX Raspi
          https://lowpowerlab.com/atxraspi/

          Power Block
          http://petrockblog.storenvy.com/products/13969704-powerblock

          Mausberry Circuits
          http://mausberry-circuits.myshopify.com/

If you're looking for something less expensive, you can get a cable with an inline switch that connects to a power supply. However, using the switch to shut down isn't as safe as the options above. You'll have to shut down the Pi from the EmulationStation menu first, then turn the switch off.

@trekdrop I just ordered my second powerblock. Works perfect. If you have the right wires you don't even have to solder anything. Yes it is a little pricey with the shipping but hey it is worth it. Imagine when your friends come by and ask you where the on off switch is. What are you going to tell them? How are you going to even look at their face. You'll be the talk of the town, kids are going to laugh at you, they will throw stone at you. Anyway, just buy it, it is worth it. If you have problem with the setup let me know.

think its been a week since I ordered my powerblock.. what's the lead time ? when did you order and how many days later did you receive ?

So you didn't solder it at all ? how does it connect to the pi ?

it was the kids laughing at my that prompted me to buy the powerblock.. I just couldn't face it no more

@mulder79 Haha... I actually went to electronics store and randomly chose some pack of buttons, lights and female to female wires. The guy in the store was not helpful at all. Everything worked just fine. I also had some spare wires that I used for the button. I had to use hot glue to keep the light in place though. When I install the powerblock I used spacers. It is easy to cut and adjust. For the screw holes, I had to expand it a little bit with a hot nail that I warmed in the fire:) Here are the pics:

@mulder79 Yeah shipping takes forever.I even forgot about it. I was single when I ordered it and someday my grandson run to me with a happy and loud voice and told me "grandpa! you have a mail." That was weird because I didn't get a mail in years. Everybody gathered around me while I was trying to open the well packaged box with my shaky hands. As soon as I opened the box, tears came to my eyes. I told the story to my family and we all celebrated the moment.

@SloTayHolmes Does purchasing the PowerBlock over the other options in any way benefit the RetroPie devs?

                      Thanks,

@battlecat I'm not sure if it benefits the devs. But if it does, I'd be really happy because they've shared so much with us! Mine is on the way from Germany right now.

Petrockblog/Petrockblock is the guy who sells the powerblock. He's the one that pretty much started the RetroPie project. I believe he's an admin on here as well, but I have no idea if he actively develops for Retropie nowadays.

@trekdrop I followed this site to put a switch on my pi3 (using GPIO 03 rather than 18 to make it a start/stop switch)and it works fine. "https://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-78055/l/adding-a-shutdown-button-to-the-raspberry-pi-b"
