I have a few games that do not really have a way to save, so I decided to set up some hotkeys to save and load states. I went into RetroArch via the RetroPie menu in the UI, changed RetroArch to "Save Configuration On Exit" bound my desired buttons to the save state and load state options, and exited. I went back into RetroArch, and everything saved properly, but when I try to use the buttons in game...nothing.
I am using a RPi B+ with a Saitek P990 wired USB controller, and binding the hotkeys to buttons 10 (save state) and 11 (load state), which are not currently used for anything else (I originally had them mapped as left thumb and right thumb, but unmapped them to see if that was the issue). I am using Military Madness in PCEngine and F-Zero in SNES to test this stuff.
Everything looks like it is supposed to, so I am not sure what isn't working. I did a system reboot, but that did not help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@jabberwock101 sorry for a dumb question, but are you pressing select (or the button you have set for hotkey enable) AND the save button simutaneously?

I have been looking into this for a day nad a half now, and when I saw your comment my first thought, after blinking a couple of times, was: 'I swear, if it's that simple, I am going to loose it.' It was absolutely that simple. Select plus the desired hotkey press worked like a charm.

I feel kind of stupid now. If this combination to access hotkeys was listed anywhere, I certainly missed it. It just goes to show that tunnel vision can obscure even the simplest of solutions. Thank you so much for giving me the answer to my, as it turns out, rather simple problem. (Did you plug it in? No, ok plug it in...ok, now press "on"...yeah, the one labeled O-N...)

Look the default joypad hotkeys on the wiki:

I did see that, but for some odd reason, I interpreted that as meaning that those were just the default, and were overridden by my new bindings. It never even occurred to me that the select part of that would remain after I changed the bindings. Now I know better.

              Thank you once again.
