Boot crashing on preliminary keymap? (Pi Zero)
-
Disclaimer: this is my first time working with a Raspberry Pi, but this feels more broken than it should be.
I've installed the Retropie 3.8.1 image on to my micro SD card, and tried to boot it up on my brand new Pi Zero. It starts to look like it's booting successfully, but then it seems to launch into Retropie prematurely after showing this screen.
After showing this for a brief second it takes me right to the Retropie splash screen and stays there indefinitely. It doesn't get as far as Emulation Station. I can't press f4 to get to the console, the green light on the Pi is frozen, I can't do anything.
I've tried different power supplies, re-formating the SD and re-loading the OS image, I've checked that my SD card and keyboard are supported, and I'm out of ideas. Tomorrow I'll try a different keyboard, but aside from that I don't know what else I can do. Help?

@johnthenlnja basic troubleshooting just to rule things out. Have you tried booting without any peripherals plugged in? Also verified you used the correct sd image? Maybe try a diff sd card just in case as well if possible
-
@herb_fargus Yep, I verified that it's the right image for the Zero. When I disconnect the peripherals (so the data port is empty) now it went to the Retropie splash screen and then came back to this.
That bottom line flips between "Raise network interfaces" and "Prepare console"

@johnthenlnja since the pi zero doesn't have native wifi or Ethernet really, this may help a bit: http://blog.embeddedcoding.com/2015/06/how-to-avoid-dhcp-delay-if-ethernet-is.html?m=1 not sure how useful it is if it won't even boot up for the first time though.

@herb_fargus I'll see if I can play around again when I'm more awake. This feels like it's going to be a frustrating one.
-
@johnthenlnja likely a config or hardware/sd card/power supply anomaly as my pi zero boots fine (I have both versions of pi zero)

I've now had a little more time to play around and experiment with different configurations, and I'm not much further than I was before. Tried different SD cards, tried different power supplies, even tried different keyboards, and still no luck. It seems like I experience different symptoms every time I try startup. I try to start with a freshly imaged SD card every time, and sometimes it gets to the "setting console keymaps" hangup, and sometimes it freezes on the RetroPie splash screen. The console keymap error is the most consistent though, and that's the farthest I've ever seen it get.

I found the answer. I ordered a second RPi Zero to test the theory that I had hardware issues, and sure enough the exact same peripherals, SD card, and RetroPie image fired right up on the first try. I don't know exactly what happened, but replacing the main board did the trick. Thanks for your help, @herb_fargus!
