PS3 controller config input help

I am trying to connect a wired ps3 controller to my pi3 with a wired connection. I was able to edit the config and get the controller to work in the emulation station menu. When I go to do the config input on the controller it will not accept any of my buttons except up and down to scroll through the different buttons. Can someone give me some ideas as to why the controller is detected but I can't seem to get the buttons to be recognized to configure the controller?
