Mame4all in game settings not saving

Hi All, I am new to this but I found an article on here from a few years ago telling to delete the /opt/retropie/configs/mame-mame4all/cfg/default.cfg file to reset the programming set by pushing Tab In Game. I did this and it worked to allow me into the programing to set up my controllers HOWEVER, Now on exiting the game and reentering, the settings DO Not Save If anyone knows what I messed up I would appreciate your help. I have re-installed the Rom but still no good.
