So I have had a raspberry pi model b+ for a while now. I only recently have attempted to use retropie on it. I have a kingston 16 gb micro sd card with adapter and am using a mac to download everything. The sd card imager I have used is called the RPI builder, and have downloaded retropie version 3.81 on it. When I put the sd card in, it configures everything, but suddenly calls for an illegal instruction and brings me to a simple screen with an ASCII image of a rabbit and some performance monitoring.

I have been looking, and know that it is supposed to automatically boot into the controller setup, not this. I have tried basic commands, but fear to make to big of a risk without corrupting anything.

Here's one more clue: Whenever I finish imaging the file to the sd card, it says there has been an error with the disk ejecting. Despite this, the disk keeps trying to boot when I put it in the raspberry pi.

I would greatly appreciate any help, and will take 6-7 hours to respond (I can also send images to show what is occurring).

@Just-Dylan Have you installed the wrong image? Sounds like rpi2 version on a rpi1

@BuZz I can't seem to take a picture right now, as it may be an error, but I can type a document similar to what appears on the screen right now:
              This is what appears:

              Illegal Instruction

The command line is also available an is:

              I hope this helps.

                  @Just-Dylan no such thing as a model 2 B+:

                  from the documentation:

                  https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation#sd-images

                  SD Images

There are currently two versions of RetroPie. There is one version for Raspberry Pi 0/1 (Model A, >A+, B, B+) and there is a version for Raspberry Pi 2/3.

Download the SD image for your version of Raspberry Pi from the following page:

                  https://retropie.org.uk/download/

If you are unsure which version of Raspberry Pi you have there is an easy way to check:

Rpi 0/1= 1 raspberry when the pi boots up

Rpi 2/3= 4 raspberries when the pi boots up

If you get the error Illegal Instruction when it boots, you picked the wrong SD image.

If you read the documentation it will answer 99% of your questions: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/

@herb_fargus good point. I suspect they have a rpi1 also.

@BuZz Oh my god I very much apologizing for wasting your time. I kept getting confused with the 1 and 2. I now understand that I had the wrong model all along and will keep that in mind. I am not all that knowledgeable in it because I use it infrequently. I do thank you for the support and will remember to use this forum if I need information in the future.
