Hello. I just got a raspberry pi 3, Im a newb to linux, never used retro pi or any emulator before really so I have questions and I need answers designed for a moron. Ill probably have more as I go so Ill just keep to this thread.

What I have is a retropi, raspberry pi 3, and a snes like controller. I got it put together, loaded retropi newest version and I am going good so far. I have it up and running, played quake that was installed already so I have gotten that far.

1- Is there a way to get rid of the emulators I wont use like the dos or dreamcast one from showing up on the main screen for emulation station?

2- What am I doing wrong with the controller? I setup the buttons but the save, load commands dont seem to do anything in games as I dont seem to save and the load does nothing, and sometimes it seems like the select and back buttons for stuff are reversed from what they should be. Sometimes Y is select, others its X

Please try and use a descriptive title - even if it covers just one of your questions. I have renamed your topic.

You can update retropie-setup and remove emulators you don't want. It's a feature of 4.0.

regarding controller configuration did you set it up as described here - https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation (Check the controller diagrams)
