Cant get games to start

First of all, I am using Retrocake to install emulationstation, retroarch and its cores automatically on a Win10 machine. After installation I can get into ES, it detects my roms that I added, all fine but trying to launch anything just for a sec gives me a black screen, then dumps me back into ES. Tried a couple of different systems...
I know this is the RetroPie forum but not sure where to ask otherwise to reach out to people who know this stuff... anyone who knows what is happening?
