Illegal Instructions Screen, on Pi3 B+, still stuck after trying everything
-
Hi,
I already tried a couple times to install, reformat, reinstall...
I searched the whole forum, all the threads with the keywords Illegal Instructions, I have read the Read First thread as well.
- Raspberry Pi3 B+
- SD card: 64gb Sandisk Extreme F32 Formatted with SD Card Formatter+Guiformat
- Case: Nespi with fan and heat sinks
- Power Supply: Model BX-0502000 Output 5V -- 2.0A (bought it on lazada, listing said it was a 2.5A...but from what I have read it shouldn't be a problem as long as the voltage is 5V?)
That's it I think? It always show the same death screen. Seems that a lot of people got this issue but I just can't find any real answer to this problem.
Also, I tried to get the log screen with the log command, but all I see is an empty screen with the shortcuts commands like ^R ^G etc.
I am completely lost (and a bit frustrated tbh haha) I made sure that everything I bought was legit, I followed the instructions, installed the official image...I really tried everything.
Thank you for your help.

No, it is a problem. The 3B+ is more sensitive to power issues - get an official Pi power source when in doubt.

@mitu The title of the listing was Raspberry Pi Charger, with many positive reviews.
Here's the listing in question: https://www.lazada.co.th/products/power-adapter-5v-25a-micro-usb-port-for-raspberry-pi-3-model-b-i267302853-s417721400.html?spm=spm%3Da2o4m.order_details.item_title.1
The clients seemed satisfied. But alright, I will buy an official Power Supply, and come back with the result.
Also maybe worth noting, I am located in Thailand atm, I know the electricity is different here...Not sure if it has anything to do with it.
I will come back soon with results, thank you.

That's not the power source you've posted first. That one was explicitely rated 5V/2A:
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/BX-0502000-multi-plugs-5v-2a_1955999096.html.Also maybe worth noting, I am located in Thailand atm, I know the electricity is different here...Not sure if it has anything to do with it.
No, it's not. A Raspberry Pi doesn't need less power when in Thailand or other place and electricity is the same everywhere.
Try getting the Pi out of the NESPI case - which has some models that are known to alter the power draw - and power it up again.

I tried to run it without the Nespi, same story... I tried one of my chargers I use for my phone with a usb wire (it says 5V 3A on it) same thing.

@lajeandom Can you show a screenshot with the error ? From what you're saying, the system boots, but doesn't start EmulationStation and you get that 'illegal instruction' error ? Are you sure you have the right image for your PI model ?
-
@mitu I made a video of my screen so you can see exactly what happens.

Also, I would like to note that during 1st and 3rd install, on the Illegal Instruction Screen, something different appeared, talking about samba daemon or something like that, there were like a couple lines of text but after that it was still dead.
Oddly it didn't do it on 2nd try and all the other attempts for some reason lol.

I think you've downloaded the wrong image for your PI model. You don't have a PI 3B+, but a Pi B+ (which is a Pi1): the boot shows only 1 raspberry, which means you have only 1 CPU/1 Core and the architecture shown by the RetroPie welcome screen is
armv6l
(Pi Zero/Pi 1).Download the image for the PI0/1 from the download page and try with it.
EDIT: or return the package if what you were promised was a 3B+ model.

@mitu oh wow, well I got this card for 600 baht (roughly 18 usd) which is not a bad deal but I thought I got a really good deal...f me lol, the deal doesn't look as good anymore.
Alright I will reformat and reinstall with the other image this time and let you know.
Thank you so much again.

Actually I just saw the performance test...I think I will get a Pi4 and modify the Nespicase lol...I want to play ps1 dreamcast and some n64 Mame etc, the Pi1 B+ doesn't seems to be strong enough for all this.
