For MAME2003 a rom from the MAME78 set will do the trick, as for FBNeo one from the latest sets and a bios rom for the new C-Chip MCU dump is what you'll need.

I have got the latest C-Chip BIOS, which was puzzling me for a while as to why the game wasn't working, but then...

So pretty please could there be any word on support on my preferred FBNeo or Mame2003plus?
Read arcade documentation and use the right romsets, the dat file for fbneo is there : https://raw.githubusercontent.com/libretro/FBNeo/master/dats/FinalBurn Neo (ClrMame Pro XML%2C Arcade only).dat
To the rescue comes @barbudreadmon which from the DAT file I saw that I was missing the cchip_b22-15.53 8Kb file from my ROM. All sorted now, thanks!

I rescued ya as well by telling ya to grab the latest rom which would have had the C-Chip file you were missing :D

@thestarglider I know you've sorted this but I had a problem with this rom which I solved that other people might run into. I'm using Mame2003-Plus fyi. If I have the rom named rbisland it will not work but renaming it to rainbow fixed it. This I assume is tied in to romsets, I believe the newer version of the rom is called rbisland. I was using Lightspeed to create my romlist and annoyingly that only recognised the game as rbisland so I had to rename the rom to scan it, rename it back and edit the romlist manually after scanning.

Just create the mame xml or use the xml in the metadata folder

Man I LOVE that game, just try the PC Engine version, is the best version of all emulators (almost for me), and you havent infinite coins ;).

Hi I'm having the same problem here, but cannot find anywhere the cchip_b22-15.53 8Kb file, any hint? BTW why is it missing in the new rainbow island roms? Is it supposed to be inside the CCHIP.ZIP file? The CCHIP I found out only contains cchip_upd78c11.bin file.
Any hint or word of wisdom?

@giangio
cchip_b22-15.53
is in therbisland
romset whilecchip_upd78c11.bin
is in thecchip
romset, both files are required and part of recent MAME romsets (if you are using FBNeo) -
Hi all
First time post!
I am very new to this world of emulation but am trying to get Rainbow Islands working (pref with a cheat as I have not beaten it in 30 years!)
I have downloaded the actual files twice - from internet archive and also on the web. I have a collection of b22... files. I have got both Retroarch and MAME loaded up and I cannot see what I need to do next or where the files (ROMS?) go.
I was looking through this thread and I am not sure where I get the two cchip files from? When I try to load the game in Retroarch using one of the arcade emulators (I loaded them all in), it just keeps throwing me to one of the other console emulators, like the N64 one. Is there something easy I can do to get this working please?
Edit: Do I have to download the entire 4gb of data or something to get the files I need? I only want to play this one game

That sounds like you extracted the rom zip files, e.g. the aforementioned
rbisland.zip
andcchip.zip
. You should leave them intact and just copy both of them into yourroms/fba
orroms/arcade
directory. To get more information about what's wrong, you could run the game with verbose logging from the Runcommand Launch Menu and check the logfile
/dev/shm/runcommand.log

Thank you Clyde.
I am just using Linux Mint rather than a Raspberry Pi (so sorry if I have put this in the wrong place but I couldn't any other source of info or help). My path for MAME is:
/usr/local/share/games/mame/roms
And I have put the zip for Rainbow Islands in there with the zip for Cchip. Is that right or am I doing something wrong? Do I need a CHD file? I am confused as I say about the 4gb of files that I have seen mentioned in a few places?
Edit: Since placing those zip folders into the right place, it is now just saying cchip_b22-15.53 (8192 bytes) is not found? So am I nearly there? Is there a place I can find this one particular zip?
(Sorry for questions)

Hi again, I don't know what I did but somehow I managed to get it working finally! Thank you for the tips though :-)
