Are those Game & Watch Titles (mgw) dumps or remakes ?
-
I was wondering if the Game and Watch titles are
remakes, or dumps of the original lcd handhelds (and
thus being emulated). i know this is a bit of an odd question
but i was just wondering about this. -
These are remakes.
There are no "roms" to dump, each game had it individual circuit design.
So they are not really emulated - they are simulated ;) -
Actually, according to this page, dumping them is possible.
http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Game_%26_Watch"The lack of information on the Game & Watch's hardware leads to the false belief that it does not contain a CPU or ROM and therefore could not be emulated. Even though this was disproven after reverse engineering efforts of several MAME developers led to support for a few games being added to MAME, emulation of additional games is progressing slowly due to the high amount of time and patience it takes to dump their ROMs and recreate their graphics."
However, in RetroPie they are simulated.
-
@Niejeden in the end it is like the situation with "PinMAME".
Yes, you can dump the ICs of the PCB which contain the general data of possible movement, score-system, sound-behavior and other relevant data.
But in the end you cannot "run" the game with this dumped data alone, you need seperate recreated items (concerning PinMAME: "VisualPinball", concerning G&W: recreated playfield & characters/items)) to play them. -
The fact that they are not really dumps but remakes doesn't really detract from the excellent job someone has done in creating these. I have quite a few now, somewhere in the house I have the original "Fire" which I have not yet been able to find. I also had the one with the diver going for the treasure whilst avoiding the octopuses tentacles.
The way the are displayed is awesome too, and you get a real feel of the original. I'd forgotten how basic yet imminently addictive these things were. -

I have a few as well like "ball" and "the exterminator" which sadly are not a part of the madrigal simulator set.
