I’m new to all this RetroPie stuff. I’ve built my own bar top arcade with the raspberry 3b. I have a lot of external HDD laying around and came across a 120gb one. My question are as followed: I keep hearing 64gb, 128gb thumbdrive and ect, so by having that can you only put games on that?? Or can I use it to put more images and stuff on it instead of directly onto the micro sd card that’s booting RetroPie.? Mind you my SD card is only 16gb. I see that it shouldn’t be a problem but I wanted to make sure that it can be done with out messing anything up and/or that it’ll even work. I keep hearing also In the lines to “64gb images” as well as the bigger ones when talking about uploading splash screens and images.. I’ve been trying to look in detail for a specific answer into why they keep saying that, do the packages that are around taking up that much space or what..?? Thank you in advance for any answers or advice from anyone ,much respect ✊🏽..!

I followed these instructions to run everything from an external HDD:

        https://www.tomshardware.com/news/boot-raspberry-pi-from-usb,39782.html

This moves the entire operating system from the SD card to the HDD, and the SD card is only used to load the boot loader, then boot from the hard drive.

This also has the bonus of improving overall speed for all disk operations.

The process copies the entire root volume over, so you don't have to re-install retropie.
