Backup via file shares the ROMs, config, BIOS folders and restore them over file shares to the new system.

@mitu Sorry, a bit new to some terminology. Could you explain what you mean by file shares? Because right now I'm just dragging those folders via SSH onto an external hard drive.

@mitu Would Samba be any faster than transferring via SSH considering they're on the same network?

Yes, file shares should be your first option for file/rom transfer - before SSH.

I did this when I had to migrate over to Stretch and a 3B+. I went in using WinSCP and copied all my roms, scrapes, downloaded_images, overlays, etc.. everything I worked all the hours on getting and making. I still went in and set overlays manually, etc, perhaps there was a better way to do that part. It's not a fun task but sometimes we have to jump off into another build. Which reminds me I need to copy all my folders soon, way too many hours invested.

@mitu Thanks, I got that going right now. Only thing now is I hope I remember all the small things I did such as get rid of the 2nd bluetooth option when using a PS4 controller, downloading all the experimental emulators, ect. I really didn't want to touch my build as I thought I had it down pretty well.

Would dragging over all the gamelist.xml files and images folder over for scrapes mess with anything? AKA has any file destinations been changed around?

You can get a listing of your installed emulators by looking under /opt/retropie/emulators and /opt/retropie/libretrocores. You can then install them on the new system.

No, they should work in the new system also.

@mitu Awesome. Thank you so much for the help. One last question. I noticed I have 22gb worth of cheat files that are transferring. I don't really have much need for them and can always re-download them later If need be. Would it mess anything up if I deleted this folder before transferring over the configs folder?

@phelix01 I guess not, though I don't understand where you cat get 22 Gb of cheat files (!).

@mitu Trust me I'm not sure either. I was checking what was taking up so much space in my config folder and apparently it downloaded every cheat file for every game for almost every system on my pi and each one is ~1mb

@GreenHawk84 I totally get this. It took months to get my build perfect to the point I was only adding around 1 rom at a time so I could scrape and detail it perfectly. Now we have a huge upgrade it makes my palms sweaty so I don't mess anything up lol.
