Audio output (3.5mm jack) is Mono instead of stereo (solved)

Fresh install of current official RetroPi image (4.6)
keyboard, mouse, Pandora's Box 5 twin arcade stickI use my 3.5 mm jack for audio and the output seems to be monophonic. Both the L and R audio seem to be jammed into the Left channel only. I've looked at some posts in the forum here to see what i can glean, but my problem hasn't abated. If I use the Audio menu from ES (by hiting the Start button) I can see the Audio Device is PCM. I've tried changing this to other items but the amulators come back with a 'No Mixer Device found' error and the audio reverts to default. I've also tried changing the Audio Card setting and then altering the Audio Device, but nothing changes.
This post here seems to be similar to what I am dealing with: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/25573/mono-sound-from-a-usb-sound-card?_=1589392172151
In that post I notice that the PCM device in his configuration file was sending both channels to Left. -
I decided to completely disconnect and rewire the audio. I am getting stereo audio again. I am going to call this a cable fault.
