Xbox360 wireless controllers - receiver connectivity issues

The script above works well, but it didn't fix the flashing ring of lights that would normally indicate the controller is still trying to connect. Shouldn't the light switch to the corresponding lighted quadrant that the receiver sees the controller as (1-4)?
Is the flashing ring the normal behavior or is something still incorrect?

I'm not sure if you already did this step but...you'll still need to setup the Xbox 360 controller in the RetroPie Setup Script. This should setup the correct "corresponding lighted quadrant" to light up.

@backstander nailed it. LED's work now, and are much less annoying.

I'm having issues with this as well. It seems like random results, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes LEDs are flashing, sometimes they show contoller#, sometimes they die.
Is there a working fix? Will a fix be available in the next version?
I'm running 3.8.1 with raspberry PI 3.

Upon running script, I get
Gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
Tar: child returned status 1
Tar: error is not recoverable: exiting nowAnyone else get this? What have I done wrong?

@raelik I used this code to fix my controllers and it worked perfectly to fix the wireless controllers, however upon reboot, now i have no sound, and my resolution is way off... any idea what went wrong?

actually the controllers only work in the emulationstation menu, once i get into a game in an emulator they do nothing (i've tried re mapping them)

is this issue fixed with retropie 4.0? i've installed it and xbox360 controller works as it should. the only thing is the annoying flashing ring. i had this problem on other systems when using xpad, so that i allays used xboxdrv instead of xpad. is there a fix so that the lights don't rotating in circle anymore?
has anyone tested the downgrade script with retropie 4.0?

Yeah, real talk, how do I un-downgrade? The workaround described in this thread works great, but I'm curious how I would undo it short of re-formatting with a new image.

Haven't messed with it myself, but the post announcing the 4.0 release includes the information below on the topic. At least with 3.8.1, I found the XPAD driver to be functional but annoying due to the constantly flashing lights. Unsure if this newer XPAD driver resolves this.
NOTE: Some people have been having trouble with the XBox/XBox 360 controller driver xboxdrv on the current Raspbian Kernel. To work around this we now include the latest xpad kernel driver with the image (it is available from the Packages -> Drivers menu for those upgrading). The included xpad has been patched to map the Xbox 360 triggers to buttons, so they work out of the box with Emulation Station, without the need for xboxdrv.

This should be fixed I believe? I loaded a fresh 4.0 image, upgraded to 4.0.1 about a week ago and I have four 360 controllers all working with the proper quadrants lit.

The updated xpad driver supports the LEDs.

Thanks for all you did on this Buzz and submitting the LED change also. They work great right out of the box! :)
@Maynard I would imagine 4.0 should work fine with no issues too but Buzz would need to verify.

It does. If the LEDs are not working then you haven't installed the updated xpad driver.

I can confirm, original 360 controllers + 3rd party PC receiver + latest xpad-driver works with LED Player# assignment.

@Arcuza Can you confirm how you do the LED to player # assignment with xpad? The instructions on the wiki seem to be relating to xboxdrv.

@jonfitt I can confirm that out of the box the LEDs are flashing, but the buttons are working.
After installing xpad driver LEDs are working (=showing assigned player#), but I needed to (re)configure the buttons. The issue with buggy right trigger button (when configuring buttons) also was fixed with xpad. When waking the system from dimmed mode and powering on the controller, the LEDs are initially flashing until you push a button, then the controller gets assigned. xpad also handles assignment of two of my controllers.
I tried xboxdrv several times but it was very buggy and worked for some time and stopped working for some time.

@Arcuza Hmm. Out of the box the controller is working and the LEDs are flashing for me also as you experienced.
However afaik the 4.0.2 I am using comes with xpad installed already. That's what it's using out of the box as far as I can see. The driver setup shows xpad installed, and xboxdrv not installed.
So when you say you installed xpad drivers, did you re-install them, or perhaps just update them?

@jonfitt I went into drivers in the setup menu and installed/updated xpad. Actually, I don't know if I technically installed it or updated it.
I did the install/update right after a fresh install. I did not fiddle with Xboxdrv in the same instance.
