Where is the default file for crosshairs?

I've found some crosshairs that I want to use with MAME2016 build 0.174 at https://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_supp.php but I do not know how to select them. The instructions on that page are for a Windows installation. I've spent about 5-6 hours researching and nothing is turning up.
When I go into the in-game menu (Tab), I see Crosshairs as an option, but the selected is DEFAULT. How can I change it to one of the files from the page above?
What is the location of the default crosshairs in Retropie?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

UPDATE: I have re-created this issue on a PC and get the crosshairs to work fine. I tried to mirror the file paths/names but no luck. So I'm still looking for a solution to this.
