Has anyone got Outrun to run successfully on zx-spectrum. If so how did you do it? I have tried everything I can think of to get it to work with fuse and lr-fuse emulators with no success. I have got the arcade version working under mame but I would really like to play the spectrum version.

@Yorick I can't get the ZX Spectrum Outrun to work either. I've tried two different .tzx ROMS.

I still can't get it to work. I get an error saying couldn't find ROM 'if1-2.rom'. I managed to find this file and put it in /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS but I still get the error message. I tried the path /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/fuse aswell.

The common .Z80 seems to be a bad rip. Can't speak to the .tzx versions. I'm aware of a ZIP that contains a pair of .dsk files that work fine with lr-fuse.

            File Description:
US Gold Ltd - Original release - +3 disk image

            ZIP filename:
            OutRun.dsk.zip | md5: b0f27bb18a8c2299d9827d0a312454dd

            Contents of ZIP:
            Outrun - Side A.dsk | md5: 4e93706d362ff480576540a8b37f3bb6
            Outrun - Side B.dsk | md5: 3d7cd5f1f264255e27643f9b308623bc

To use, extract the .dsk files into your roms/zxspectrum folder. DO NOT compress the .dsk files. Leave them as .dsk format.

When launching with lr-fuse, you'll get a little menu. Hit ENTER while "Loader" is highlighted.

Thanks @roslof !! I got it to work now :)

Is there a way to combine .dsk files? I've got Outrun listed twice in my menu in emulation station because it sees 2 .dsk files.

                Hi,

I have had this working using the following rom I got from the spectrum TOSEC

                Outrun (1998)(US Gold)(Speedlock 3).tzx

                    Good deal!

I did check out the .tzx version and several others, and there's something to consider:

The music doesn't play during gameplay and in sub-menus.

Really your choice, but if you want music during the game, the .dsk version works well.

As for naming, I just renamed mine in Emulation Station as:

                    Out Run (Side A)
                    Out Run (Side B)

                      Hi,

I have just tested mine again and the music plays in the menus and the game.

Are you playing with 48k or 128k machine selected? There is no music on 48k version.

At, nice, that's probably it. Will try that.

Latter games generally came with a 128k version on one side and the multi-loading 48k on the other. It was soul crushing to wait for 5 minutes and then realise in horror that you'd loaded the wrong side :D

(The 48k only had a very bacis buzzer for sound while the 128k versions had a basic dedicated soundchip, the same used in the Colecovision i believe. You can do some interesting things with the buzzer, but it can't run a game at the same time)

I seem to remember my copy years and years ago had a separate tape with the arcade music on it so you could essentially listen to the actual arcade music, while you played the game.

                              I remember that tape.

The 128k version plays two of the tunes (can’t remember which) and alternates between the two between stages.

There isn’t a music select screen like on the arcade cabinet.

To be honest though the spectrum version is so slow it is almost impossible to play!

@tuki_cat I remember that too. Yet I still loved it and played it loads! Hard Drivin' as well! 🙂

@aidy80-s Its a shame Hard Drivin' lacked a self centering steering wheel. It's about as playable as the SNES version.
