Settings Menus Open and Immediately Close

Morning,
I'm using a raspberry Pi 3b with retropi installed. If I go to the retropie item on the menu and then, for example, Retropie Setup, or File Manager, Splash Screens etc etc. Any menu item available, an animation plays to show the menu item has been selected. There's a brief pause. Then the animation reverses and the just selected menu item is highlighted. ie I can't seem to select any menu items.
Anyone else had this issue? Has to be something I've done but not sure what :-)

If you run the RetroPie-Setup script from the terminal - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/ - can you see any error messages ?
