I am at the welcome screen and it tells me it detects the gamepad and to Hold A button on your device to configure it.

I've got a pdp wired xbox 1 controller connected via USB. I have held every button but to no avail. Also when I use my gamepad on my laptop a light lights up above the Xbox button but this does not happen when plugged into my raspberry pi 3

Please add more information about your system - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first, including the model of the controller (maybe also a product page).

Can you test your controller from the command line (exit Emulationstation with F4) by running jstest /dev/input/js0 ? If the controller is detected, it should detect when you press the buttons/d-pad/joystick.

@imran7junior Please don't bump old topics - even if remotely connected to your problem. Open a new topic and add the info requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.
