Installed 4.0.2 and roms not working
-
Hi'
im new to all this and just got a pi 3 to use as a media centre but it was no better than my onboard media player on my tv so i thought i wander what else i can do with this pi3 so i stumbled on this retropie and was amazed it can run all them emulators, so i formatted my 8gb sc card (10) and burned the 4.0.2 image then powered up the pi and did setup and added some roms, but not a lot is working. no idea how to get amiga to even show up let alone play games, anyway after wasting a whole day i reformatted the sc card and downloaded v3.6 burnt it to sd booted pi and installed roms and its lovely im so happy i found this software, but now i want to add a ps3 wireless controller and as im on v3.6 i need a patch? So i have just registered at this site to ask one question. Where can i download v3.8.1 as i believe that is a good version and i do not need a patch to run a ps3 wireless controller.TIA

I will help with 4.0 - I can't help with an older version - however some older releases are available from https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/releases
It sounds like you didn't install the Amiga emulator - al the information you need is on the wiki - starting with https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation

Hi BuZz
i didn't install amiga emulator on 3.6 but its there and works along with other emulators, this is one of the reasons i want 3.8.1 and not 4.0.2ive just looked at your link and bingo 3.8.1 is there :) thanks and now i will be finding all my old 90's amiga fun again :)
Thanks again

You can install an Amiga emulator easily enough on 4.x, they just don't come pre-installed. There is no reason to use 3.8 over 4.x
-
@BuZz
maybe in time i will use v4 but for now, im going to use what works and 3.8 works on not just amiga but loads of others.
v4.x gives nothing and i spent a whole day just trying to get the amiga to work with no luck, so imo i would say 3.8 is a lot better choice for noobs like me. -
You are mistaken - 4.0 has everything 3.8 has in regards to Amiga emulation - except the uae4arm emulator has had some updates/fixes. Sounds like you did something wrong.
-
@BuZz
No idea what went wrong then, i just installed the 4.0.2 using the same method as i did 3.6 and 3.8.1 but in 4.0.2 when retropie starts it just has the "retropie" button and nothing else and when i installed roms they would not show up, all i see was the "retropie" button/logo i did get spectrum to show up but that was about it. i spent all day trying to get the amiga to work but no luck. no problem at all with 3.6 or 3.8. maybe i did something wrong when installing v4. -
As I said, not everything is installed by default now (to keep image size down as we add more packages and so users can more easily customise their setup).
It's all in the installation instructions https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/First-Installation#installing-additional-emulators--ports
You need to install the Amiga emulator of your choice from retropie-setup
-
@SimonF1 The disconnect here might come from an assumption that installing the Amiga emulators is somehow difficult in some way, requiring a certain knowledge of Linux. This is definitely not the case. In fact, the extreme ease of installing an emulator here is sort of the point of RetroPie's existence to begin with. All you really have to do is navigate to the option and push the button and you'll have the most recent versions available.
-
well ive tried v4 again and i just go around in circles it just don't make any sense to me at all and if v4 was the only version then i would not bother.
Thank god for v3.8 because i enjoy using it its a fantastic piece of software that i can easaly add my roms to.
this v4 and not wanting to make the file size to big is no good for me.
i would rather the retropie file size be 10gb and take me 5 hrs to download because i would still be up and running faster that way.maybe one day someone will upload a new version with the emulators already in the download like v3.8 has.
"Software can be installed from the RetroPie-Setup script - which is accessible from the RetroPie menu on EmulationStation. Once there you can navigate to "Manage Packages" where you will see various sections. In each section are lists of packages that can be installed (and it will show what is currently installed). Stable additional packages are under the "Optional" section, with more unstable packages listed under experimental. The packages are ordered first by type (emulators / libretro cores / ports), then alphabetically. By selecting a package you can choose to install it, or remove it. Some packages also have additional configurations."
how is the above going to help me install the Amiga emulator?
-
By installing it - from the "Optional" section (look for uae4arm or uae4all)

oh ya so it does :)
so i guess i do the same for psx and the others? -
@BuZz
I give up with this damn 4.0.2 its been nothing but a time waster for me. i spent all last night trying to get play station emulator to install and after letter the pi run all night downloading "librato" sorry about the spelling., anyway i woke up this morning put the tv on and checked the install and still no playstation icon so i will be using recalbox for plastation games and retropie 4 for amiga , i may as well just go back to retropie 3.8 where i have both working.Thanks guy's for all the help but this v4 is wasting my time and i can use 3.8 and recalbox 4 and be happy with it.

You are doing something wrong - the playstation emulator is installed by default. It also doesn't take hours to install. (But there is no need to re-install it).
You might want to take a moment to think about the time I am spending trying to help you BTW.
-
Did you read through https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/playstation-1 ?

Mate i'm so sorry if i did not seem appreciative, i am, and i really do appreciate the time you and "mediamogul " have given in helping me.
for me though the difference between v3.8 and v4 is chalk and cheese.
on 3.8 i simply added the bios for amiga and PlayStation and put some roms in the rom folder and bingo all up and running.
did the same approach in v4 and nothing shows up, so then you tell me i have to install the amiga emulator in v4 so that's what i did and then the amiga worked so i then mess about trying to get the PlayStation to show up and two days latter ive got nowhere.
v3.8 and v4 are very different.
i didn't have to do any research or reading manuals to get v3.8 up and running but v4 seems to have a manual for just about every turn.I just want a plug and play like v3.8 is.
Do you know if there is any plans to put the emulators back in like they are in v3.8 in future versions?
-
No plans - that won't be happening. PlayStation works out of the box - if you provide some details we can try and help. It's not a big deal to have to install emulators as needed and most people prefer the flexibility 4.0 offers.
-
maybe someone could do a step by step guide video for noobs like me to follow then? that would save a lot of time in the long run, but if its only me that has problems using v4 then its best i just stay with v3.8
tbo im loosing the motivation to play the old games now, due to all the messing about with v4 its kind of taken the heart out of wanting to play old games.
you say playstation works out of the box, But v4 has nothing in the way of emulators displayed when retropie 4 first loads, so its not really play out the box for anything let alone PlayStation or amiga.
Don't get me wrong i think this software is fantastic but in v4 you have changed something that requires me to do something that i can't do and that's the only problem. its me and my fault not the program.
-
There are step by step guides
eg
https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation
Playstation is installed by default as mentioned. You just need to copy your cd images to the psx folder (Taking note that you need a .cue file for every .bin file as mentioned in the documentation).
-
@BuZz
Yes i will read up more because i see for ps1 the .bin now needs a .cue file, for the game to show up in the emulator. I'm just wondering if this is why i didn't see the PlayStation emulator because i only had .bin files so the ps1 emulator was not triggered to display.anyway i will find the time somewhen to do some research and i will then have a better understanding of the system. i have so much on at the moment.
i was just hopping for a plug and play similar to 3.8.for now i am going to format the sd card and put a fresh install of v4 ready to go for when i am more knowledgable or less ignorant lol, but hey i really do appreciate this help mate, i will get there in the end :)
