My mayflash f500 elite will work in retropie but not the mame arcade app. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Which MAME emulator are you using ? RetroPie comes with a few versions/variations of the MAME arcade emulator - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/MAME/.

Try to add the info requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first, what you provided so far is insufficient.

That's still very little information - how is the gamepad connnected ? What version of RetroPie are you using ? How did you install it ? Did you configure the gamepad in EmulationStation ?
